After nine years of being a mom I joined a local mom's club. I am so glad I did because it has been a wonderful source of information. That is how I found out about Twirly Go Round. My second daughter who is five refuses to wear pants and is very particular about what skirts she will wear. When I saw these precious outfits I knew I had to order at least one for her. The skirts are made by Franklin mom Amanda Underwood. The tops have a flower made with the coordinating fabric that easily snaps on and off for washing. I love how the skirt can be warn all year round with different shirts. If my daughter likes a dress or skirt she wants to wear it all year round. As you may know, I was diagnosed with breast cancer on May 13th, 2010. I have already had a double mastectomy and I am in the process of receiving six chemo treatments. Prior to being diagnosed I supported Race for the Cure in honor of my dear friend Kris Mramor who is a seven year survivor. Since my diagnosis I have connected with many survivors locally as well as across the country. I walk in honor of those breast cancer survivors who have been where I am now. Those who have so graciously reached out to me to encourage and lift me up during this challenging time: Kari Hazelbaker, Ronna Knox, Chrissy Hancock, Barbara McDole, Debbie Wade, Lou Ann Jones, Kendall Womble, Connie Edwards, Sue Jewel, Nancy Tice and Colleen Grady. I also walk in honor of two women who have just begun their treatments only a few weeks behind me on their journey: Tracy Rhew and Heidi Gerencer.

We have also chosen to support one of my favorite local companies: www.thinkhappystuff.com. We believe as a survivor you can "Change Your Thinking Change Your World!" How do I change my thinking? How do I stay strong during such a challenging time? I focus my thoughts on my many blessings!!! I finally checked out one of our newest restaurants in Franklin. 31 South Grille is located on Columbia Ave. near the new Chick Fil-A (I KNOW moms know where that is!). First of all, I can't believe they have my favorite pot-luck appetizer on their menu - Buffalo Chicken Dip. If you haven't had it go ahead and email me a recipe request. I can hardly control myself at neighborhood gatherings!!! I will refrain from describing all the food I tried during one evening meal at the risk of totally freaking you out. I want to know what is going on in the world in general but I do not have to filter through all the bad news to find out what is going on in my local world. My mom friends know I like to know what is going on and I typically inform them of local happenings. If you don't have a mom friend like me but want to know what is happening I have two wonderful resources for you!!! Although I am still a loyal daily subscriber to The Tennessean I must mention two local resources for almost anything you need or want to know in the Franklin & Brentwood areas. Moms Who Want to Move!!

I love life!! It is so funny, fascinating, amazing, incredible . . . how through our life mom friends come and go and influence and inspire us in so many ways!!! After a childhood of minimal exercise and an adulthood of gyms & small personal training packages intermingled with bearing three children I find myself in the midst of lots of "moms who run". These moms don't just run for fun but run in races!! I started running in September of 2009 after my Y bootcamp trainer told me I had to run for the pre-bootcamp test. I ran my first mile ever! Since then I have run 2 5K's and can now run 5 miles. (inside track with no hills!). I am starting to understand the competitive and charitable aspect of races. One of my mom friends who recently ran the NY Marathon reminded me as I struggled up a hill during the Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell 5K, "Remember all the people with arthritis who can't run!!". Thinking about the people we were helping encouraged me to keep going. The competitive aspect only kicked in slightly as I passed a few people and thought, "I can do this!!!".

If you are a "mom who runs" you should check out two websites: Nashville Striders lists all the upcoming races and Fleet Feet is a locally owned specialty store that will help you with gear, information and training. Between these two sites you will have at your fingertips a wealth of information to encourage you and your mom friends to start moving for a good cause!!! If you haven't heard yet, registration for the April 24th YMCA Country Music Marathon is now open!! If you are like me . . not quite ready to run a 1/2 or whole marathon you can run with your children in the Kids Marathon the Friday night before. Let's get moving and teach our children the benefits of exercise and fitness!

After growing up in the warm climate of south Mississippi I tend to hibernate when the temperatures are below 50 degrees. There is a bright side to this since the longer I stay inside the more I realize I need to simply and organize. One great way to do this is through Freecycle. I joined their Yahoo Group a few months ago after my grandmother passed away. I have been donating most of her things to Graceworks but somethings the non-profits may not need or want. One reason Freecycle was developed was to keep things out of the land fill. We have all seen a variety of useful items on the curb on trash day that someone else could use. People who have less than us and people who may need what we do not are out there if we can just connect to them. Freecycle is the the way!! They do have guidelines for membership so read carefully and go clean out those closets!!!

Christmas Trees in Tennessee- Cut Your Own!!

I remember one year growing up in south Mississippi we begged our parents to take us to a real live Christmas tree farm so we could pick out and cut our own. It was a fun family experience I will always remember. I haven't taken my family yet but it is definitely on my "to do" list!! My mom friends are already talking about where they should go to cut down their fresh locally grown tree. Here is the entire list for Tennessee at the Pick Tennesse Products website. One mom friend just went to the Blackjack Farm for their tree. She said they enjoyed lunch at the Bell Buckle Cafe while in the area.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - Books from Birth

Recently I joined a Mom's Club after being a mom for 9 years and living in Williamson County for 5!! I realized that many new moms may not know about this cool program started by Dolly Parton in 1996. Imagination Library is a program where your child receives a book every month from birth until they turn 5. Books from Birth of Middle Tennessee is our local affiliate. You can sign up all your children, make donations to the foundation to help keep the program going as well as read all about how the program works on their website. I know my children get so excited when they receive their new book. If your children are too old to sign up please consider making a donation to this wonderful program that promotes literacy in communities across the country.

Recently I ran across another local mom owned company that I had never heard about: Doodle Clips. The owner is the mom of one of my son's classmates. As I have said so many times, I have such great respect for moms who "Go For It!" by being their own boss!! That is one of the main reasons I started this blog. Many moms are entirely too modest/humble to share their businesses with everyone they come in contact with. Also, big time holiday markets are out of reach for many home-based businesses. The booth fees and time requirements are too costly for many moms. Here is a cute idea for some reasonably priced stocking stuffers or gift add-ons.

One of my favorite local mom owned businesses is the Sweet Dreams Cookie Company in downtown Franklin. I don't know Marnice personally but she welcomes everyone with her sweet smile and pleasant nature. I have been on their mailing list for a while and just received the news they are closing their retail location. I am very disappointed because I was trying to figure out how I could have a birthday party or play date there. Here are the details from her recent email:

After living here for five years I forget that not everyone knows all about the cool things Williamson County has to offer. That is one reason I started this blog. One of my favorite resources for the county is the Southern Exposure Magazine. I remember receiving it when I first moved in. I thought it was a neat local "free" magazine. As time went by and issues arrived I realized I must have been receiving it because I was a newbie to the county. So, I purchased a subscription. I have never once regretted the purchase. I realize it is a tough time for print media so I want all my mom friends to know about this magazine. Please support it, read it & love it!! Maybe you can split the subscription with a mom friend. Don't forget the best type of recycling is to pass it on for more people to read!!

Check out www.wonderffuls.com They are located at The Factory in Franklin but I didn't know about them until I read about them in Southern Exposure Magazine recently. They are a unique women-owned bakery. They create beautiful cakes but the fun and creative gift idea is the "wonderffuls". I stopped by there recently and not only do they have the most friendly service they have samples and coffee. They are similar to truffles but made out of cake balls dipped in the most scrumptious chocolate! I enjoyed reading about how they came up with their business idea. I have a mom friend that lives in New Mexico. I always enjoy sending her locally made treats. I will definitely be ordering these this year!! Tired of cupcakes? Stop by and try a Wonderfful!!!

After hearing about Graceworks Ministries of Williamson County I finally checked out their store. I have made several donations through the past few years but I never had time to actually shop until recently. I do enjoy great deals especially for a great cause! I couldn't believe the high quality of their merchandise. I then remembered that our local elementary school and my church donates all of their lost and found items to them. If you have little ones it seems they ALL want to be heroes at some point. My girls and my boy love to dress up. I looked all over for a cape for my son last year for his birthday party. I do not own a sewing machine nor do I even attempt to make anything that involves what I call "manual labor". I prefer "digital labor"!! Some things we moms take for granted that EVERYBODY knows. It was brought to my attention this week that not every mom friend of mine knows about the free oral antibiotics at Publix. In fact, I wasn't even sure which ones were offered for free. Last year my pediatrician told me amoxicillin was free so I carried my sick child inside (prefer drive-thru!) Publix. Last winter I was taking care of my grandmother which was challenging at times. I arrived at our Brentwood Baptist preschool to take my youngest and a car pulled up near me. I was about in tears after talking to a nurse, doctor and a physical therapist about my grandma's health. I looked up and saw, "igbok - it's going to be o.k.". It was such a simple thing to make me feel better. Usually, my mantra is "things could always be worse". This is definitely a more positive mantra to adopt!! I was interested in hearing more about the stickers. I asked around and found out our neighbor church Fellowship Bible Church was distributing them. Since then life continued as busy as ever, my grandmother departed this world for Heaven in August and then, of course, school began. I continued to see the stickers around town reliving the moment those letters comforted me so much. Ronald McDonald House NEEDS Your Tab Tops!!

I have been saving pull tabs from my soup cans, soft drink cans, vegetables cans etc. for at least four years. Ronald McDonald House takes them to an aluminum recycler and receives money for them. They are heavier and more dense than cans so that is how they raise more money for their wonderful and greatly needed organization. The rate of return on aluminum is 31 cents per pound. Today I finally learned what to do with all of those pull-tabs!!!! Here it is in the corner of the Ronald McDonald House Nashville dining area: THE collection bin conveniently located in their house on 2144 Fairfax Ave. Nashville. Now I can encourage everyone to save their tab tops!! If you are not familiar with the Ronald McDonald House please check out their website. They are always in need of volunteers to prepare meals and perform normal households tasks. Our Sunday School class from Brentwood Baptist Church worked their "to do" list and prepared lunch for the residents today as part of our "Great Day of Service". Sorrellina Designs Featured at Over the Moon!!

I have a mom friend who just in the past few years began to explore her creative side. I do believe we all have one we just have to first take time to find it and then to really explore it. For Leigh it is painting . . . true, mix up paint, use a brush and create on canvas kind of painting. She is painting beautiful crosses as well as images of your home or a favorite home of the past. For example, if you would like her to paint your childhood home she can take your photo and create a beautiful painting. She is now selling some of her paintings at a great new store called Over the Moon. Sorellina Designs is now a featured artist!! You can read Leigh McGinty's story at www.overthemooncollection.com. I finally was able to go see in person what Over the Moon is all about. I was very impressed how the owner Cat has carefully and thoughtfully chosen the products and artists. Chef Paul's Catfish - Cajun - Burgers NOW OPEN!!

Many of my friends are missing My Friend's Place Deli formerly located on Mallory Lane so I want to let you know the location is open and serving some great food!! No, it isn't a deli anymore but a nice locally owned restaurant offering a variety of items in a family friendly environment. I'll start with my favorites: Gumbo and catfish (Mississippi raised, of course!!). Chef Paul is also the owner of Harpeth Grill in Brentwood so that is why I am already very familiar with their food. My husband loves their crawfish etouffee and my oldest daughter thinks their chicken salad sandwich is the best!! Their entrees are reasonably priced at $14.99 and less. They have chicken as well as burgers. The main thing to know is Chef Paul is committed to great service so if you don't see something on the menu just ask!! They are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Their website isn't up yet so call them (791-1004) if you have any questions or ask me for a copy of their menu so I can email it to you. Pick Your Own Blueberries!!

Blueberries are finally ready!! We picked at Golden Bell Blueberry Farm. It is located right here in Williamson County!!! They are located at 4080 Clovercroft Road, north of 96 in Franklin. They are open from 7-12 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The berries are $2 per pound and are ripening at this very moment!!!! If time slips by please call first: 794-3758. As of this week they expect to have berries through August. We had a fun time picking our . . . 1 pound!!! Yes, the kids weren't as diligent at picking as I thought they might be!!! I think they quickly figured out they were picking for me since they really don't even like blueberries!! I learned a lot about the different colors and flavor and how to find the really ripe deep purple ones.
If you want to try growing your own blueberries check out the Franklin Farmer's Market on Saturday morning. I bought my own blueberry bush last summer and it is now producing a few blueberries . . .maybe more next year!

Soon after my 87 year old grandmother's husband passed away I began trying to convince her to move from her independent living center in Atlanta to a center here in Franklin. I was very fortunate to find out about A Place for Mom. As my friend's know I am addicted to "Googling"!! I love researching things on-line. I came across this site and quickly registered for more information. Within hours I received an email and phone call from my new "eldercare consultant" Claudia. She lives in Murfreesboro and covers a certain geographical area. She explained that she can help us find a new home for Grandma in Atlanta or here. They also offer assistance with all types of care and their website offers support for all issues related to eldercare. She is paid by the companies not by you!! If you only need "senior helpers" they also provide information on all types of companies. Are Your Kids Begging for a Pet?

My oldest daughter has been asking for a gerbil for a few months now but we consistently said, "No rodents in our house!". Through some interesting and unforeseen circumstances we have adopted not only a rodent but a quite large rodent!! Her name is Caramel and she is a guinea pig!! She was twice given up by owners who eventually grew tired of her squeaks and messiness. She was given up with her cage and all supplies free of charge. That situation reminds me of the importance of pet adoption. If you are thinking about a pet - almost ANY kind - please check out Petfinder.com. I didn't realize until recently they list all sorts of birds, reptiles, "small & furry", horses, etc. Owning a pet is a big responsibility and also a great learning experience for our children. We all might find ourselves in a situation where we will need to give up a pet so this is a great resource for giving pets a new home. If you are interested in certain breeds notice they list rescue organizations for hundreds of breeds and types of animals. You can search their database by zip code and then breed, gender, etc. Happy pet hunting!!!

Are you like most moms? Do you have a bowl/jar/tub full of loose change that builds up? I have one of those coin rolling banks but somehow I never seem to find the time to roll the coins. I did try Coinstar coin counting machines in the past but I do not like to pay a fee for counting MY money. If you haven't already checked out the new Learning Express in Cool Springs (conveniently located near Sweet & Sassy) you must! One of the three female franchise owners is not only a mom but a Williamson County school teacher!! Their variety and prices are great and they offer free gift wrapping! One other important thing to know is they have a wonderfully convenient gift registry. The birthday child picks out their items and they are stored on a shelf in a tub behind the register. If your birthday child isn't registered they offer gift cards and gift receipts. Take your kids and spend some time there. They have many items on display to try out including some really unique riding toys. Don't forget to register in their "Name the Frog" contest!! Just in case you are wondering . . .if you purchase the $19.99 "Grow-a-Frog" kit your tadpole will arrive safely within a week!!

I have always been a fan of the locally owned restaurant. I have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone who takes the leap of faith to start their own business. I also really LOVE eating out. Last night I ate at my favorite local sushi restaurant. They have been open a while but I just realized they have a new website. We have eaten there and carried out from there too many times to count. The food is really nicely prepared and presented. The atmosphere makes you forget you are in a modest strip center next door to Lenny's Sub Shop. The owners have worked at many Asian restaurants and are familiar with all sushi varieties. Great Way to Learn More about Photography!

Many of my mom friends received new digital SLR cameras for Christmas. Congratulations to all of you!! I bought mine spring of 2006 and have really enjoyed learning more about the art of photography and taking better pictures of my family and friends. I want y'all to know about a great resource we have here in Williamson County. The Brentwood Camera Club is a great way to learn more about your new camera. Yes, it does sound intimidating. It took me a while to finally attend a meeting and join. There are around 25o members which include a diversity in ages, professions and backgrounds. You can sit next to other moms like you or someone who is a published professional photographer. Once you pay your $40 annual membership fee you have access to all members via their Yahoo Group. After reading it a while you will feel very comfortable asking questions about anything photography related such as hard drives, tripods, Photoshop, etc. The experienced members are very helpful. My closest mom friends know I really don't enjoy shopping unless I am shopping on-line in my flannel p.j.'s but there are some things you just can't shop for on-line. Unique gifts is one category you need to see, touch, feel & smell in person. Many friends told me about The Lofts at Henpeck and I also saw the advertisements in the paper announcing its opening. I planned on going to look around and maybe even let you know what vendors are selling there. I knew it was an ongoing market but I didn't realized how many vendors were represented. There are local artists selling paintings, stationary, jewelry, candles, clothing, etc. I recognized some businesses were Williamson County Mom owned. The entire upstairs is devoted to selling really cool unique things. You should really check it out!! Meet your mom friends there for lunch and shopping. They have great food, Coke Icee's, coffee bar, and of course you can fill up your gas tank, too!! If you are a mom who owns a business you might want to find out how to rent space there. Chef Tim's Cracked Pepper Catering

I received a "thank you" note in the mail this week. My first thought was, of course, "who is thanking me for what?" After opening it I was surprised to see a hand written note from Chef Tim Place. He used to have a restaurant next to Lenny's on Columbia Avenue. It was one of our favorite restaurants and GNO spots. After it closed, I called Chef Tim and ordered his boiled Gulf shrimp (there IS a difference in kinds of shrimp!) and his chicken and sausage gumbo several times. He recently found a new place for his catering kitchen on 96. His personal note was to launch his new website: www.cheftimscatering.com I enjoyed reading his profile and getting to know this nice family man better. It makes me want to have a party so I can hire him to cater it!!

Go For It!! Find Your Passion!! Encourage Others!!

I truly believe that one of the many joys we can get out of life is to inspire others to find their passion. Yes, we all love our families and that is a major priority in our lives while our children are young but I have seen how fulfilled moms can be when they try new things and discover what they really enjoy. For some it could mean going back to school to become a massage therapist or aesthetician, buying a first digital SLR camera, or taking painting classes. The first step is trying new things or going back to things you used to enjoy before the craziness of family life took you away from it. The next step some moms may want to take is to start a business making money from these hobbies or degrees. Many of us want to make that step but are held back by our perfectionist tendencies. We figure we can't do it or it might be too hard to do. I salute those mom friends who are "going for it!!" Most of us are not so great at self promotion so please if you have a mom friend who has started a business please share with us and encourage her to keep going!! No, it isn't all about making the money for many of us but it is about doing something we really enjoy!!

Favorite Digital Memories is Launched!!!

I am so very excited to tell you about my dear mom friend Rachel's business!! www.favoritedigitalmemories.com. Rachel has found her passion in helping us organize our memories. We all have tapes stuck here and there that we NEVER watch. I joke with my husband that we can look at pictures and watch our videos when we are hanging out in the "ol' folks home". Well, we shouldn't wait!! First of all, our VHS and camcorder tapes deteriorate over time. I have been married 16 years and Rachel converted my wedding video over to DVD and we watched it on our last anniversary. It is amazing how adding some creative touches and having it on DVD really encourages you to "relive the moment" of your special wedding day. Hey, it worked for us!! The kids so excited to watch "mommy and daddy get married"!! Rachel can combine your video footage with your pictures for some cool DVD's for birthdays, sporting events/seasons, new babies, vacations, etc. Once you have all your family events organized into DVDs you and your family can have a fun "movie and popcorn" night this winter. Great Way To Sell Your "Mom-Made" Items!!

You may know all about this website but I just came upon it recently: www.etsy.com After briefly looking over the selling fees it appears to be a much more simplified system verses Ebay. Since I am not into selling anything handmade nor could I imagine ever having anything to sell I checked out the products that are offered for purchase. On the home page click on "Shop Local" to find people in Franklin, Brentwood, Nashville, Spring Hill, etc. It was very inspiring to read the profiles. Lots of people like you and me who are selling their coolest handmade items on an organized sharp looking website. Soon after discovering the site I heard great things about it first hand through one of my Brentwood Camera Club friends. She used to sell her photography and art at local craft fairs. After being injured in a car accident she began selling her items on her Etsy site www.acelebrityexperience.etsy.com In just two months she sold more than she had sold at several craft fairs and has customers all over the world! That is very exciting for her and very inspiring for us!!! Check it out and let me know what you think!!

New Hobbies for 2008: Digital Scrapbooking

During 2007 I bought my first digital SLR camera (Canon Rebel XTi) and my first Apple laptop computer (MacBook Pro). These two purchases have definitely changed my life. They have also led me to my new hobby for 2008. I had never heard of digital scrapbooking but I am one of those moms who purchased Creative Memories supplies over the years because I enjoy the parties and seeing what everyone else is making. My creativity was always stifled by my joy of socializing! Also, I do not enjoy cleaning up paper messes and the clutter of all the supplies. If this sounds familiar you should definitely Google "digital scrapbooking" sometime. It is amazing what cool things are out there! I remembered a mom from my son's soccer team mentioning "digital scrapbooking" last October. Amy is also a busy mom of three but was so sweet to come over to give me an intro on what digital scrapbooking is all about. Check out her blog: http://www.amyscraps.blogspot.com.
